New statue on the block, Nelson Mandela (1918 – 2013) statue by English sculptor Ian Walters (1930 – 2006), was unveiled by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown just over two weeks previously on the 29 August 2007. The bronze sculpture is located on the opposite side of the Parliament Square from the Brian Haw peace camp. Donald Woods the South African journalist and fellow anti-apartheid activist originally proposed the stature of the former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela.
