Footnote
Michelle Sadgrove’s involvement in Mark Wallinger’s “State Britain” began with researching and taking on the role of participant observer on Parliament Square. From this research, Michelle Sadgrove created an archive (with the help of the Parliament Square peace campaigners of Brian Haw and Maria Gallastegui) of the 1,500 amalgamated items that made-up Brian Haw’s demonstration. The realisation of this work took seven months. Managing it’s recreation with a very hands on approach, Sadgrove selected fifteen artists at varying intervals to work alongside herself, while maintaining meticulous attention to detail on all aspects of this 40 metre work of art. Every item was reproduced in a manner rigorously based on the original artefact. Parallel to the work at the studio, Sadgrove managed the Tate Britain team in installing this work. “State Britain” went on to win The Turner Prize in 2007, and in 2008. Sadgrove also supervised the installation it at Mac/Val Paris and Aargauer Kunsthaus, Switzerland.
