Eric Levy (1928 - 2022) a retired teacher who was a peace and human rights campaigner. The picture shows him speaking with a visitor to Brian Haw’s peace camp where he could often be seen supporting the campaigner. Eric Levy was a long term peace activist who before the illegal invasion of Iraq, flew to Baghdad to join other international volunteers as human shields. They were trying to dissuade the bombing and stop the invasion (to the annoyance of the arms industry). His peace campaigning started many years previously in the early 50s against the Korean war and also for civil rights in America where he was living at the time. Before his death he was campaigning to free the journalist Julian Assange who is being wrongfully detained in harsh conditions in London’s Belmarsh maximum security prison and against the illegal extradition of the journalist to the USA. His protesting activities have ranged from protesting against the former apartheid system in South Africa, to supporting Palestine human rights, ecology and more. Eric Levy was approachable, quietly spoken, with clear well reasoned views, and with a deep commitment to doing the right thing in opposing injustice and violence.
