Jean Lambert, Green MEP for London, speaks at a London Guantánamo Campaign event outside the US Embassy marking the eighth anniversary of the opening of the illegal Guantánamo Bay detention camp. Jean Lambert Member of the European Parliament criticises the lack of justice, respect for human rights and the rule of law at Guantánamo Bay, saying that its existence perpetuates the terrorist threat to the world. She pointed out the failure of the US and the UK, two of the world’s great democracies, to work out an agreement on the release of Shaker Aamer. She also criticised the slow response of European countries to the US calls for help in closing down Guantánamo. Lambert stated that MEPs would be stepping up the efforts on member nations to act this month at the European Parliament as well on the issues of extraordinary rendition and human rights in the European Union. The banners behind Lambert read: No To Torture and the other, Shut Guantánamo Now. American Embassy, London, UK, 11 January 2010
