Chateau de Terre Neuve, a French Renaissance building was constructed in 1580, for Nicolas RAPIN, High Provost of the Constables of France and companion to Henry IV. During the 19th century, the Chateau of Terre-Neuve was owned by the Marquis Octave de Rochebrune (1824-1900), archeology architectural artist celebrated for drawings and etchings, notably monuments in the Vendée. Georges Simenon author of numerous books perhaps best known for "Maigret", lived their from 1940 to 1943. Often visited by his friend the painter Maurice de Vlaminck.
