Statue of a winkle is a prime example of winkle statuary. The original historic winkle statue displayed in Hastings perhaps for over a hundred years. However due to damage this old sculpture has been replaced in 2012 with a more ornate appraisal of a winkle by a modern sculptor for the twenty first century, sponsored by the Winkle Club, a society founded by Hasting Fishermen in 1900 to help raise funds for underprivileged fishing families. The common periwinkle or winkle a member of the Littorinidae family, a species of small marine snail a gastropod mollusc it has gills and an operculum.
Note: Not to be confused with the winkle-picker a shoe tapering to a long pointed toe, fashionable in the late 1950s
