First Starbucks

First Starbucks original coffeehouse, started roasting coffee beans in 1971 in this building in Pike Place Market Seattle. In 1983 Starbucks in began selling coffee drinks and other beverages, rapidly expanded its number of stores, which today are more than 17,000 stores in over 50 countries. Starbucks was named after Starbuck the character in the classic American novel Moby-Dick by Herman Melville. The novel’s first mate Starbuck always tries to do the right thing, an ironical namesake for Starbucks who have a coffeehouse in Guantánamo Bay the controversial detention camp.
