French submarine ESPADON which means ‘swordfish’ in French. Espadon could dive for up to 6 days, and travel up to 18 knots under water. In May 1964, Espadon travelled under sea ice in the Norwegian Sea as far as 70° north. Espadon original home port was Lorient, however since 1987 Espadon has been a popular museum ship at the fortified lock of Saint-Nazaire build originally by the German occupiers in the Second World War as a U-boat submarine base.
